Recovery times for gunshot wound?

I am an author, and I would like to hear the most detailed description that can be provided on the recovery times for a gunshot wound. I would like when they would most likely be released from the hospital, when they can resume daily activities, and when they have made a "full" recovery. ("Full" is in quotation marks as I would assume such a wound is never FULLY recovered, but as best as can be said.) The scenario: A brave man, about 16 in age, strong, fit, encounters a group and is shot in the left side of his chest, two inches from the heart (two inches to the outside, meaning away from the center of his body). He is shot at practically point blank range with a simple handgun. Now, providing the doctor was amazing and the slug could be removed without too much damage to the preexisting wound, what would be the most realistic recovery times for such a non-realistic scenario? Keep in mind that this man is lucky and WILL survive this, and continue life afterwards.

I would appreciate an honest and thoughtful response. The more information the better. I will remove any comments that I see as an insult to my honest question.
