recovery after hernia surgery - help me make husband see sense

My husband had hernia surgery and was told to not drive for 6 weeks and to not lift anything. He did not feel like doing it anyway.

It takes 6 weeks for the incision to heal enough to hold together, but, not good enough to do anything such as lifting or making a long trip.

My husband tore his loose again by doing the leg lift exercise the doctor told him to do later on. He had hernia surgery again. Later on the hernia was back lower down even tho he took extra good care of it. Heis babying it the past few years and not having it fixed until he is forced to.

Usually the tissue surrounding a hernia is not in the best shape, is weak, and is easily torn again below the old hernia.

You need to have a talk with his surgeon and let him know what your husband plans on doing.

Time to step in, for the sake of the headstrong hubby... I would advise you alert both his work: e-mail would work here, and his medical staff. This protects him from liability caused by being "non-compliant" to medical advise.

What he is planning puts not only himself, but others in a precarious situation. What if your husband has a medical situation that causes an accident and his employer is responsible?

Proper healing is the most important phase of recovering from surgery. He owes it to himself, and you, to heal properly, and slowly.

Thanks all for your help - the surgery went well, and he doesn't seem to be in any pain and prefers to be up walking around, managed to keep him home til the tuesday (op was on friday) but now he's gone back to work, the boss has apparentely got him doing paperwork only at a desk and has said nothing else, unfortunately he believes he is now ready to drive again and plans to take the car from tomorrow, I have tried telling him that if he has an accident he will be uninsured but it falls on deaf ears, I almost wish he had a little pain to remind him of what he's gone through, it ended up being quite a large incision at about 6" but surprisingly he says the area is numb and doesn't even need pain relief. I think the anaesthetic must have also numbed his brain because he is now trying to sort out a skydive, not sure yet how far in the future as I just replied to his text saying we'd discuss it with the consultant at his followup as i'm sure something like that should be left for a good 6 month after any surgery, never minding the fact that he already has a dodgy hip!! I tried telling the nurse about him working and she reiterated the fact that he should not work for 2 weeks even at a deskjob but he is a stubborn so & so and just could not stay at home!!

Thanks again
