Recording Vocals Without Background Music?

I have tried to record my vocal in the following ways:

1. With both headphone on: This suck because I really can't hear myself sing that well with both headphone on. With most sound card, the delay is too much.

2. With one headphone on & background music playing: Basically, I have 1 headphone on my left ear and one headphone off. I can hear myself sing better this way, but the background music is too distracting.

3. With one headphone on & no background music: I have one headphone on (barely on) because I want to listen to the metronome to stay on time. Basically, I'm singing an Acapella. I can hear myself sing much better this way and stay on tune.

My question: Is #3 a good way to record vocal and it is recommended? Why and why not? I mean, it get frustrating when you can't hear yourself correctly. When I sing live, both my ears are free, but when recording, one of my ears is listening to the background music through the headphone and one ear is listening to myself sing. This doesn't work too well for me. What do you think?
