No matter if the company is Harley Davidson or someone else, any company needs to make a product that people want and can afford.
It is with no doubt that many people desire owning a Harley, but the expense of one makes people look to buy a cruiser motorcycle from less expensive companies like Yamaha and Honda. Many people are more concerned about their financial future than buying a more expensive American product.
Since the popularity of HD is because of its American history, it won't be successful if it changed to moving to producing outside of the U.S. because people who love Harley won't see the point of owning one if it is made in Mexico or China.
So how does Harley make the world want an expensive American made cruiser and not a cheaper Japanese made cruiser or sportbike? Truthfully, they can't. It basically comes down to what the people in our society want at the time. If HD sales are down, then society obviously does not want to spend their money on a HD or perhaps any motorcycle as a car is more important than a motorcycle for most people.
I own a Ducati motorcycle. Why did I choose to buy an expensive, Italian made sportbike than an American cruiser? One reason is I wanted a sportbike. Harley does not make sportbikes and was unsuccessful with it's Buell line and dropped it.
Ducati has a long history of dependabilty. Harley does not. The Ducati culture is that which is well-mannered and intellectual. Harley is more known for being old, drunk, grey-bearded ex-con Hells Angels riding around with extremely loud exhaust pipes.
So it also comes down to what image a person wants as he rides his motorcycle.
Harley has not always had a positive image and still doesn't and may be the reason why people look to other manufacturers.
