I'm going fishing in northern Wisconsin this weekend...I'm not a hard core fisherman, but have fun casting a line out in the water to see what happens...

Last few times I've been out, I've tried minnows and nightcrawlers and haven't had too much luck. Last time got bites on the nightcrawlers but think they were too big for the fish to take in whole.

Can anyone recommend any other sort of "simple" bait I could use? I heard cooking up some bacon fat with garlic salt is a good one to use...

Are you letting your bait stay motionless.Or constantly casting and retreving. You will catch ten times more with the latter. I would stick with the crawlers and minnows.Kind of want to know what you are fishing for to determine best bait. Most important is just get out by the water and enjoy yourself.

Depends what you're going for.
Nightcrawler are sure to catch something. It would probably catch most variety of fish.
Try using a lure, perhaps a crankbait, a rat L trap, spinnerbait.
Its not hard to use just cast and reel it in, you can adjust the speed of the retrieve if no bites.
I'd stay away from bacon and garlic...unless you want John Goodman on the other end of the line.
