Recommend Laptop, Dell/Mac?

I've never owned a laptop/notebook before and know very little about computers. I've been looking at getting an apple mac because I've heard there good with design software and dont get viruses, but the prices for just a basic 13inch macbook are putting me off. I've just been looking at the dell laptops n they seem to be a better deal. So i was wondering what ppl would suggest and if in the dell I would be better to go for an 'Inspiron' (I've heard some bad things about the speakers) or a 'Studio' n what I should be aiming for as far as basic specs. I would be using it for my design course, so mainly using adobe photoshop and the internet. Or if you can suggest any other reasonably priced laptop thatd be great. I just really need some advice, thanx.
 
I've been using computers for 30 years and was there at the beginning of the home computer wars. There were a few years when everyone had their own idea on what an OS should be. They finally came to the conclusion that they needed to make their systems compatible with each other so software could be written and run on all systems. All of them did except for Apple. Windows based computers became the choice of most all computer manufactures and Apple went their own way. Most all software companies went with the majority and left Apple in their own little world. Apple is STILL highly incompatible with the rest of the world. They have been for 25 years and have never had more than 5 percent of the computer buying market under their belt. Their latest attempt at compatibility is to make their systems capable of running windows in hope of enticing people into buying their product. This misleads people into thinking that they can run anything on a mac that you can run on windows which is far from the truth. The parts interchangability on a mac is almost nil compared to a pc. If you want to upgrade your mac, you buy a new one. Not so with a pc. There are tons of hardware mfgs out there for a pc and this creates competition and low prices. Apples ad campaign leads people to believing their systems are safer. The only reason they are less prone to infections is the fact that people who write malicious code are out to infect tha masses and arent interested in the small number of Apple computers out there. If Mac ever bercame half as popular as the PC, malware would be coming out of the woodwork. Apples prices are preposterous. The Mac is merely a status symbol. It is no where near as powerful as a PC. The measure of power in a computer is what its capable of running and Mac doesnt come close to a PC in this area. Why buy a Mac and then convert it to run windows so its compatible with the software market and spend 3 times as much as a PC ready to run?
There are also tons of superior graphics design programs for a PC and the myth that a Mac is superior at graphics art is absurd.
 
Depends on how much you want to babysit your computer.
PC's require constant attention to fix, update, repair, patch, fix the patches, and on and on...a never ending saga with this fundamentally broken and targeted system.
Mac's don't demand such an attention focused lifestyle, but do have limited (relatively) programs & flexibility; but what is does do, it does very well.
It's a trade-off: time vs. versatility
