MM..

I'll let you know tomorrow..I tried it earlier and it was fairly comfortable to sit in..I didn't try to recline yet..I have a feeling laying on my side to recline might be best and then put a pillow behind me.....I'm praying it works/

Will let you know...Others have said good things...It just might be difficult to maneuver the arm to recline it...we'll see..

Right now I have no comfy spot to watch tv....:D

My children and hubby always help me get out of the chair in the beginning after surgery or when I have really bad days. As you heal it will get easier with the handle.

I have been debating a recliner too, but I have been looking at ones from a company called Ekornes. They are pretty spendy, but they come in different sizes so that they "fit" properly and give the support that is best for your body size. Has anyone else heard of them?

Just checking with everyone.........I have had such difficulty sitting in a chair
since my surgery 4 weeks ago...Several people have suggested a Lazy Boy type reclining chair..

Anyone found any comfort using them, to read or watch tv? Do you simply put a pillow behind you?

Would love your feedback.

Many thanks...

LAF;)

LAF-- hello i had a 2 level fusion l4/5 , l5/s1 - with 2 roRAB and 6 screws.. i do sit in a lazy - boy chair with a pillow behind my back.. It does not take long for the pain to arise , but i need to get out of bed and try to get comfortable in another position.. I had my surgery on 2.20.08 and i'm still in lots of pain....

what kind of surgery did you have and what are they giving you for the pain ? I try to walk as much as possible , even though i'm still on my walker.. My name is billy and if you have any questions please ask okay...

god bless billy

HOW'S THE CHAIR????

How are you feeling otherwise?

I'm stiff after PT yesterday--she really worked my pelvic floor muscles more than anything and I felt like jello before I left the office.

The ice has finally melted enough that I think I can walk on our road today without risking life and lirab.

Please let me know how you are doing. When are you office pals coming for a visit?

xx MM:cool:M

After surgery I had trouble sitting in just about everything. The only chair that seemed to work was a simple metal frame office type chair that sat up straight, with a pillow behind me. Trying to sit on a couch or recliner was agony. The doctor told me either sit up straight no slouching or lay on side, which turned out to be the only positions I could do. It does get a little tiring day after day sitting up with no slouching, but it does seem to help.

I have the lazy boy heater and massaging recliner and I would not give it up for anything. I have hardware and have not had any problems. The heat is not as hot as a heating pad so you will be fine.

Were you able to try it out before renting? I am very persnickity about recliners - some feel horrid and others wonderful. My hubby, for example, loves his chair but I can't stand it. I haven't been in something so uncomfortable in a long time. When he was sick, guess whose chair he used? MINE! lol

I also made sure the upholstery was very comfy - I got the microfiber, because I love love love very soft things. (Hubby has a leather chair, and it is very cold, can't get warm in it, etc.) Again, I live in mine!

If this particular chair is not comfortable, you ought to go to a furniture store or two and sit in all the different kinRAB. Depending on how long you think you might want it, you might save money purchasing a new one. Mine was just under $500, I think, and again - it is huge. My dad was 6'5 and was always had huge recliners. That's probably another reason I preferred such a large one.

I've only lived 2 years without a recliner of any sort, and just can't get comfy. I like reclining and watching tv. Guess you can get spoiled.

New to board. I have had 4 back surgeries, last ones in March with L2-5 discectomy, framinotomy and fusion.

Looks like, now, I may have to have neck surgery, due to really horrible degenerative disc disease. If so, I will probably have to sleep in a chair for 6 weeks or more.

So, having said that, any suggestions? I am concerned a Lazy Boy may be too soft.

Thanks, Looking forward to suggestions. Alamo36

After my fusion t12-l4 with hardware I found it difficult to sit in anything without a pillow behind my back. However an overstuffed cloth lazy boy type chair is wonderful for the time and the future. I just recently went to the big bass pro shop and they have a type of lazy boy chair that also heats up.....(heat patches from the store or even the roll on stuff is a life savor) that is the next chair I am going to buy. However a friend of mine who works for a furniture company told me once even the most comfortable chair gets uncomfortable after about 20 minutes.I have also noticed that if I have my legs up at an angle it feels better. But try and stay positive because with each passing day your body is healing and the pain should lessen.

Hope you have a good day

The chair is great...I'm still a little afraid to recline in it however..don't want to maneuver the handle alone..

So glad to hear the PT went well.....she really sounRAB like she knows what she's doing.......I'm sure you're pooped by sure it did a world of good...You go girl...........

If I didn't have my recliner, I don't know what I would have done! I call it my "nest". I have a large chair, probably sized for "big men", but it is comfy enough that I can sleep in it on really bad nights. I sit with a pillow behind my back and gets pressure off of my back since I don't have to sit with all my weight on my fusion.

I love my lazy boy. It has heat and a massager in it. I would not trade it for anything. You might want to go in the store and test drive it for a bit so to speak. :D

We have a sectional couch with chaise lounges on the end. Right after my surgery I practically lived on that. Its great cause you can lay down with a pillow and still watch t.v Now I want a recliner with heat and massage but we just don't have enough room for one.

I bought a Lazy Boy Recliner before my ALIF procedure and it has been great but I found out when I was being discharged from the PA that my neurosurgeon does not like recliners!!!!! I am going in for my last surgery PLIF tomorrow so we will see if it makes a difference with the roRAB & screws. The recliner is the only way I can get some rest because I am very uncomfortable in my bed. I now have 6 pillows and my granddaughters bean chair on the bed and can get a few hours of sleep. I have had very bad spasms from the first surgery so hopefully I am not hurting myself with the recliner because I am at least getting a couple of hours of sleep.

Thanks for the response. Wasn't the massager a little tough on the incision area? Mine is about 8-10 inches long and the surgery was 6 weeks ago and it is still sensitive. Thanks Alamo36

Wow....Hey Billy.......you were 3 days before me........I'm taking Darvocet (1 pill every 5 hours) and Neurotin (1 pill 100 mg) at bedtime for nerve pain....

I had a decompression and fusion (screws and roRAB) at L3-L4...They had thought I'd need more but only ended up w/ one level....

Have only been using the cane since I'm home...Do my 20 minutes of walking (today did it outside where the pavement was dry and no ice) and then lay down for 1/2 an hour a few times a day...Usually by 9:30pm.I'm pooped....
The drugs help me to sleep and I sleep with a pillow under my knees which helps....Sometimes turn on my side for an hr. or so...just for a change..w/ pillow between my knees

Another meraber suggested a satin bottom (fitted) sheet and it's been a BIG help makes it much easier to slide to the end of the bed when you have to get up...You can find them at JC Penny on line....a bit pricey but well worth it..a trmendous help..Just be careful not to sit on the edge of the bed too long....you can slide off and get hurt...

How you are feeling better soon....

hi,just curious.now a very top notch back surgeon told me you can basically do anything after surgery except stand up and actually bend or twist from a stand up position.but if you in bed or chair toilet etc the bending etc in a sitting mode is basically okay.any comments on this orthis guy a nut?

Got the chair today...rented it for a month for only $75.....Only problem I can't get my Dad out of it......pretty funny...

Tomorrow when he''s a work its all mine.......

Thank you all...........;)
