Is it possible for a receiver to be activated on an Ontario acct but be located in B.C. and still operate? Is this against BEV policies?

This subject (and many related topics) are well covered in the forum, but here is a summary:

The terms of service for an account are that all receivers are physically located at a single address. This is enforced (partly) as a means to stop/prevent "account stacking" or account splitting where one account is shared amongst several people.

If *ALL* receivers on the account are at the BC address, then you can have a service address in BC and a billing address in ON.

If you wish to switch service between the locations, then you can use the Bell "cottage" policy calling them every time you want to switch service to either BC or ON, but both cannot be active at the same time.

Also as per your terms of service, your receivers are supposed to be connected to your phone line. This is the only outgoing communication and could be used by Bell to ensure all receivers are connected to the same line. If receivers are not connected to a phone line, you *may* at some point get a call from Bell to "verify inventory" and will be asked to provide information from the receivers.

A Bell TV receiver will work in any physical location that it can "see" the satellite(s) in orbit and this is not tied to your account in any way.

I am reading this right?

I setup a "cottage" location in "Barrie".
I "move" to my "cottage".
I call Bell and tell they I'm at the "cottage".
I can now enjoy all the programming that is available to the Barrie area like Leafs TV?
I don't get a paper bill, so nothing changes there.

habskilla,

You would do everything on your list, EXCEPT tell Bell. Then, at your "cottage" you would have the same programming as the Barrie area. Once again, this is against Bell's policies.

It works fine, though. I know someone that lives in Ottawa, and they have a receiver in Florida that still gets the Bell SD channels...

Also note that if the service adress listed on your account is from Ontario and you are in B.C you will have the wrong time on your receiver...the EPG will be displayed at the Ontario time

Wrong.

If your receiver is registered for a Moncton address, you would get programming consistent with Moncton, not with Barrie.
NO Leafs TV.

It wouldn't matter if you did the cottage policy thing or not.

Sorry, I didn't look at his location. I thought his original programming was in Barrie.

So, to clarify, your "cottage" programming will be the same as where your account is based.

I believe that the Bell's "cottage policy" has been discontinued.

Sometimes there is confusion between the billing address and the service address. When I moved from Alberta to BC, they changed my billing address but for some reason, not my service address. I still received my Flames games on SNW without a blackout although my time was off by an hour, which was surprisingly confusing, but I didn't complain.

Later I qualified for a free upgrade to the new dish because a program I paid for was on the new satellite. After a couple of months of not getting my free upgrade I complained and the address confusion was straightened out. No more Flames games but Centre Ice has more than solved that problem.

No probs. I figured you must have missed that. ;)

The Cottage Policy is officially "grandfathered", and people still do it. Bell doesn't encourage people to start. Still, if you find a dish and set it up yourself, it's possible you can get away with it for a while.

You can get away with it forever if you're careful. They have no way of catching you except if you tell them by mistake or plug the phone line in at the cottage. Even if they called to check the location ID, they would call at home and get your voicemail, and would call back when you would be back home with the receiver.
