Reason for Japan being able to take over singapore during World War II?

most of Singapore's defenses were designed to repulse an attack by sea from the south..Japanese came by land from the northwest

Royal Navy was tied up in Europe fighting Germany; HMS Prince of Wales and Repulse were the only two capital ships available and they were sunk 8 December

Troops: Indian Army not mobilized very well; Australian Army was in North Africa fighting Italians.
