RAP = poop

Why do so many people listen to rap music? Rap is 100% crap, consisting of no talent. They come up with shitty sayings like "BLING BLING" and continue to degrade the English language. It would be a little different if they raped about something other than rolling around on dubs while they smoke blunts, and slap their bitch on the ass. Every rap song I hear is about how much money they have and how they blow it on pointless shit. But to my amazement, high school dumb asses everywhere eat that shit up. There is no singing or instrument talent so what is the big deal about rap? I am ready for rap to die out like 80's metal!

Eminem = 1 no talent piece of shit.

I'm not a rap fan and I would agree with what you said about most rappers, but you should really expand your horizons. You should listen to some Black Eyed Peas and some Jurassic 5.

+1 on what was said. Mainstream rap is all about bling bling. Check out Mos Def, Talib Kweli, Blackstar (Combo of the two), and Common. They seem to be real hip hop head friendly if you're just getting into it.

Personally i like Swollen Members as well, The Roots/Blackthought, and Aesop Rock. Aesop has some of the most complex rhyme schemes in rap i've ever heard.

Pop-Rap is about nuthin but showing off. they do have a lot of very talented artists out there. Degrading the english language? listen to Rakim or Canibus, they are celebrating the english language. Rap / Hip-Hop is more diverse than u would think.

I don't know how the fuck to begin this. Mainstream rap, of course is mostly what you say, but you gotta realize that there's so much more in the rap industry than the crap you see on MTV. There are people with talent out there, and you can't recognize it. You couldn't spit flows like these guys do. You couldn't produce a decent beat. If you can, then you've got talent.

I listen to hip-hop. Hip-Hop is a different genre, but is often mistaken for as rap music because there is the same 'rapping' involved (talking very quickly). You could probably say that the difference between hip-hop and rap is similar to the difference between country and modern rock in the sense that they both have a different sound, but they both sing. Hip-Hop often has a positive message, whereas mainstream rap is mostly bragging.

I appreciate all your suggestions. I have always been more of a rock/metal type listener, and my band is more into that genre. I will take your advice and listen to some of the groups that you suggested. Who knows it might influence some of our music that we play, as far as incorporating some of the style beats they use.

I just hate going to a club and hearing a DJ put on 50 cent or Eminem. (Take in mind I live in Mississippi! Lynard Skynard is about as modern as it gets. j/k)

Thanks for your suggestions.

In the club, they can play mainstream all that they want, I'm not trying to listen to conscious music at the club.

I'll agree, 99% of rap that is widespread is garbage, but at the same time, 99% of the music that I listen to is hip-hop/rap, you just have to be very selective, like with any other type of music. It's really that you didn't come back trash-talking, and are taking the time to check out some artists.

I mainly enjoy a lot of underground hip-hop, along with a very healthy dose of east coast street rap. My favorites right now would have to be Royce da 5'9" and Cormega's newest releases.

You should check out a song by a friend of mine and a few of his boys...

Check out the song born to die.

I'm not sure that swollen members, del, etc would be the best place to start if introducing yourself to the better side of hip-hop, it's more of an advanced liking, which I border.

I'll make a short list of tracks to check out, kinda an intro class type of thing To fans of the same artists, not every track I'm listing is my favorite, I tried to make it a decent mix of lyrics and listenability to the average person.

Blackstar - Hater Players
Blackstar - Respiration
Blackalicious - Blazing Arrow
Blackalicious - Sky Is Falling
Canibus - No Return
Extended F@mm - Fuck You I Rhyme Better
Talib Kweli Featuring Black Thought & Pharoahe Monch- Guerrilla Monsoon Rap
Talib Kweli - Where Do We Go

That's enough to ask of one person

i agree totally, rap is evil, and there's really nothing to it

that said, i for one like the black eyed peas, they're kinda refreshing.
i also really like Outkast, they're not at all typical c/rap
Jurassic 5 is also interestering, and not typical

but the majoirty of rap does nothing at all for mankind, and in my opinion, it's a huge step backwarRAB for blacks trying to gain respect and kill thier sterotypes

Yea, im not one for Rap, i wouldnt just close out all rappers. I think some of them have some sort of talent, but some of them just need to find somethign else to sing about. And i agree with Renegad, it is a HUGE step backward. Rapping about killing people and robbing peeps is not one way to kill the stereotypes.

You guys gotta kinda learn something...

B.E.D. is hip-hop, not rap. Outkast used to be rap . I like Outkast's rap because Andre was creative and Big Boi was a straight rapper. Now when you say you like Outkast, do you mean today's Outkast? Most of Outkast's new stuff is less rap and more focusing on vocals (at least for Andre). Big Boi's music got weird too.

As for Jurassic 5, they are straight hip-hop.

yeah, either way he's nice tho, and that track with him and those other guys is good shit... i don't even listen to his battles, i haven't been much into battles since i quit battling... bux has ripped a lot of people

I agree that most rap on the radio is crap - much like almost all the other pop music. But just wanted to second the notion that not all the stuff out there is terrible like Jurassic 5, Talib Kwali, etc. Also to the stuff already posted i want to add Lyrics Born as a good artist to check out and take off Common - i ust dont like him at all.

Mainstream rap and hip hop is bad.

Non-mainstream rap and hip hop is good.

Saying that all rap is bad is ignorant, unless you've heard every single rap song, which you haven't.

[/thread]

I'm not a huge rap fan but GZA and Run DMC are pretty good. It's nothing like Eminem.

That reminRAB me of family guy when the pilot comes in and sees peter in the pilot seat and he immediatly says "Hey, you're not a pilot. I know every pilot in the world" (i think it was family guy)

I agree with the other people here, u really have to LISTEN to hip hop and rap. yeah all the bling bling and make em say uh shit is commercialized and mainstream, like others said, take a look at talib kweli, jurrasic 5, the roots, SOME of kanye west (ehhh), some of Jay-Z older stuff, and TUPAC ohh yea check this other underground artist IMMORTAL TECHNIQUE....you will change your whole perspective about things after listening to his songs, dance with the devil, the 4th branch, and you never know are some good songs to check out. i thought the same way about rock, and stuff, now i like coldplay, nickelback, 3 doors down, pearl jam, open up dude. (no homo)

ugh, I have to disagree about eminem, I think he's been gimmick after gimmick... people in this thread have named some good stuff, but I guess the main thing is not mistaking rap for hip-hop. then again, some people just can't stand the combination of rapping/beats
