Rap: debate topic

I am a big rap fan. I listen to some of every body, from 50 cent to Webbie, and people most people have never heard of like Dirtyboys and Zigon. Thought "Rap" has a huge fan base, there are equally as many people that dislike it. I just wanna hear some reasons why...so we can debate about this and maybe sway your outlook on the hip hop culture

Yeah, good luck with that. Music made with no musical skill besides rhythm...
There are a few select rap artists who I actually like, and they are the only ones that deserve the title "artist." If you want to sway my opinion on this, you are going to have your work cut out for you. Tell me exactly what makes Rap as good as Rock.

Edit: ....*crickets* I guess my whopping 150ish posts scared him away...

All that radio shit sucks. I went through my murder rap phase, but that was Dre, Snoop, Biggie, etc. I'm more into underground hip hop now. Beats are good, but only go so far. I need good lyrics or at least weirdness to really enjoy a song. I'm sick of that cookie cutter crap. Same shit, different name is what the industry is all about.

DL some Prince Paul, Hieroglyphics, or Blackalicious!

The underground stuff is about the same as underground music in every other genre... there is some good stuff out there, but there is also a reason that it isn't mainstream. I like the Digable Planets and groups that have really tried to innovate because thats when it crosses the line from "rap" to "music"

i like rap, it's just too bad that people have to take the big step from just not liking a style of music to bashing it. you can find bad stuff to say about any genre of music but it seems like rap haters enjoy hearing themselves talk more.

the big thing with me and hip hop are the beats. love gang starr, older nas, common, mos def, older outkast, older wu tang (including some solo albums). just shit like that. i expect shit to make me think when i listen to hip hop. common, etc do those kinRAB of things.

The shit is all the same now, not too much original shit as far as the mainstream goes. The beats are hot but besides that it's kill, money, drugs, bitches, all with everyone recycling everybody elses punchlines. I love rap BTW, like it alot better than that heavy metal or whatever it's called screaming stuff, but the state of rap music is pretty shitty now. We need someone who is incredibly original. I think it's going to go through another major change soon.

Its al lthe same thing. A black guy says, "Yo, I'm black, I shoot people, I do drugs, I drive an escalade, I pimp hos, I hate police, I act tough, I'm from the ghetto." They make minor changes to the wording, use a different beat, usually just as shitty as the last, and call it a new song.

Seems pretty fucking stupid to me, so I don't like it. But what I think is even stupider than rap is people who say, "OMG I can't believe you, why don't you like the same kind of music as me?"

for me, i simply dont relate to most of it. i am a middle class man in college who studies voice, that dresses in normal clothes and i treat women when respect and drive normal cars. idk.

most of it is very hypnotic and repetitive. easy bass line, heavy 4/4 beat, no layering or musical ingenuity, worRAB that dont even make sense, and i just dont get most of it personally. but there are exceptions.

some of the old school rap is good stuff. like, "911 is a joke" is a good song. it is facing a problem that alot fo urban areas face, where people will call for abulances and they wont even show up because of where they live. that is why people make music. to exrpess their problems and their views on life.

this one rap group on conan i saw once impressed me, a horn section, dancers, catchy guitar licks, very colorful, and they used alot of catchy wordplay and it was fun to listen to. once i smoked up with my friend when we were like 16 and i heard this one rap group he liked that was similar. very original, layering musically, even did some time changes, and it was good music. overall tho, the rap genre is something i just dont get musically. but it is definetly a respectable form of musical esxpression, even tho it is not in my musical taste, or something i listen to. it represents a new generation of young kiRAB who are just looking to change things.

I get into phases where I really like mainstream rap, and then suddently when it's been played over and over I begin to hate it. But my all time favorites are A Tribe Called Quest, Common, Mos Def, Rakim, and Tupac

OK, I don't mind people saying rap is nothing but black people talking about pimping ho's and shit because it's obvious their exposure to it has been the moronic shit on MTV and top 40 radio, so who could blame them. What I have a problem with is when people say "the only rap I like is eminem." When I ask why, unless the answer is "because he's white," I can name 5 artists who do whatever it is the person likes, better. It's the same as the people who bash hip hop from what they hear on commercial radio and MTV, only it shows that they actually have no problem with the music because they like the white guy who does the same thing as all the non-white guys.

I don't care for Rappers like 50 Cent. I like positive Hip Hop like Blackalicious. The current hardcore Rappers say the same ol shit and the beats are cheap.
