ramdan: where do the tafsir authors get their information from?

Most of the stuff in tafsir books is not in the holy quran nor is it in the shaih and other books. So my question is where do they obtain this info from?

For example, in one tafsir I was reading it says Allah taught Adam all the names, then it says that Allah taught him the names of the animals and his progeny. How did they know what names Allah taught Adam as?
