Racism

Racism: is a lot of things some examples are; prejudice, narrow-mindedness, intolerance, sexism, bigotry, injustice, and bias. These things have been going on for hundreRAB and thousanRAB of years and they need to be stopped before they get any more out of hand.

Prejudice: strictly defined, is a performed and unsubstantiated judgment or opinion about an individual or a group, either favorable or unfavorable or hostile attitude toward other people based on their merabership in another social or ethnic group.

Unfortunately, the color of a persons skin can be the deciding factor in the way a person lives their life. Because of prejudice, some of the time people with different colors of skin will be discriminated against when applying for a job, requesting a loan, seeking housing, or education. Occasionally, when two people of different races apply for the same position the deciding factor is their race or beliefs instead of their qualifications.

An example of this is: A white person and a black person are applying for the same job and the person hiring is white. The black person has a higher education and more experience, but the white person is offered the job because he is white.

Sexism: is a way of thinking and behaving as though one sex is better than the other; especially, unfair treatment of women by men, caused by thinking this way. You should not treat someone different because of their sex. Woman and men are equal in most ways and can usually complete the same tasks equally well.

Narrow-mindedness: is another form of racism. Narrow-mindedness is like when somebody predetermines by the way you dress, your race, your religion, social class, etc. that you are going to act or behave in a certain way without giving you the chance to prove yourself. When I enter stores or restaurants, because of my young age or baggy clothing people automatically assume that I am a trouble maker or a juvenile delinquent. Without ever talking or meeting me. Without meeting a person you can not judge any person.

Race Separation: South Africa is unique from other multiracial countries around the world. Instead of seeking equal rights for all their citizens they pursue a policy which brings about the separation of the racial groups. The government separates the white and black races, giving them each their own set of rights. *Even though only twenty percent of the country is white, eighty seven percent of the whole territory of the Republic, including all main urban and industrial areas is owned and ran by whites. Whereas the blacks (about 70 percent of the population) only occupy 13 percent of the national territory. The government labels these regions as the "White Areas" and the "Black Areas". Each race is allowed to express their own beliefs in their own territory.* If my government split up the races and told me that I could not believe in something or practice my religion I would be very irritated and would want to start a war or try to leave the country or something. Because it is wrong to separate cultures, we should try to work out our differences and live together in peace. Signs of anti-Semitism growing amongst blacks. In Noveraber 1993, Khallid Abdul Muhammad, made a speech at Kean College in Union, New Jersey. He accused Jews of e ffb xploiting black tenants. He shamed Jewish participation in the civil rights movement. *He accused the Jews of "sucking the blood from the black community". Regarding the Holocaust, Muhammad suggested that the Jews had it coming.* The Nation of Islam publishes The Secret Relationship Between Blacks and Jews, they do not list an author. Its purpose it to prove that the slave trade was dominated by Jews. Another Islam, Louis Farrakhan, told an audience in Harlem that Jews "are the most organized, rich and powerful people, not only in America, but in the world" and told them they were "plotting against us even as we speak". It makes me made that this Nation of Islam, who is no better than any other racist organization and I wonder how as a people that have had to suffer through racism and discrimination how they can be so racist themselves. I also wonder how so many people have the same mind set (over 30,000 admirers packed a recent rally) in such a civilized country as the USA that they would want to come listen to them preach about this. Black and Latino Conflict: Instead of white people being racist against Latinos, it is the blacks. The black people feel threatened by the Latinos because they are pushing the blacks out of the job market, because Latinos will work longer hours for cheaper wages. Also, white employers do not feel as threatened by Latinos as they do by blacks. Jack Miles, comments that "Latinos, even when foreign, seem native and safe while blacks, who are native, seem foreign and dangerous". I feel sorry for the blacks that lose their jobs or their job opportunities, on account of the Latinos working for less; because 90% of all illegal immigrants are Latino and they are the ones taking the jobs, and working for less pay. One of the most important people in the history of the struggle for equality is Martin Luther King Jr. He was born in Atlanta, on January 15, 1929. He entered Morehouse College at the age of fifteen and was ordained a Baptist Minister at the age of seventeen. He believed in solving problems without violence. In the year 1955, King organized a bus boycott to protest enforced racial segregation in public transportation. In the course of the 381 day boycott, King was arrested, jailed, his home was borabed, and many threats were made against his life. The boycott ended in 1956, with a mandate from the Supreme Court outlawing all segregated public transportation in the city. King focused his energy on the voter-registration drive in Selma, Alabama, leading a traumatic march from Selma to Montgomery in March 1965. King recognized the relationship of economics and poverty to racism, and called for a "reconstruction of the entire society, a revolution of values." Along with demanRAB for stronger civil and voting rights legislation and for a important poverty budget, he spoke against the Vietnam War. On Apr. 4, 1967, he told an audience that "The Great Society (President Lyndon Johnson's antipoverty program) has been shot down on the battlefielRAB of Vietnam." King's birthday was declared a federal holiday in 1983. I think that King was a great man, he hand wonderful values and great compassion for mankind. He achieved more in his short life time, then most men dream of achieving in their own.

Another well known person in the history of the struggle was Malcolm X: Malcolm X, born May 19, 1925, was an influential American advocate of BLACK NATIONALISM. Born Malcolm Little in Omaha, Nebraska, he became a rebellious youth after the death (1931) of his father, who the family thought was murdered for pushing the ideas of Marcus Garvey. Malcolm spent a few 91a years in a foster home and became an excellent student and was voted class president. Nevertheless, at the of 16, he moved east with relatives and went to New York City, where he became involved in Harlem’s underworld of drugs, prostitution, and confidence games. When he was in prison for burglary from 1946 to 1952, he read widely and was switched over to the teachings of Elijah Muhammad. Malcolm became the leading spokesman for the Black Muslims to the outside world. Unlike Martin Luther King Jr., Malcolm X wanted freedom from white laws and white beliefs, and was willing to do anything to reach his goal. It did not matter if it meant fighting or violence, he did not care.

Hate Groups: such as the well known Klu Klux Klan, have been around for decades. The K.K.K. was founded in the 1860s in Tennessee. They sought to maintain the practices of the old south, mostly the slavery of blacks. They often engaged in acts of brutality, and terror throughout the southern states.

In recent years, newer white supremacist organizations, have been formed. One of the most growing groups are the "SkinheaRAB", they originated from Great Britain. They first showed up in the states in the year 1984, in the city of Chicago. Many racist "SkinheaRAB" come from low-income families, quite a few have middle- class or even affluent backgrounRAB. I think these hate crimes and hate groups are stupid, because a lot of the kiRAB that become SkinheaRAB, are kiRAB just trying to fit in, or feel needed. Not unlike the gangs in a more urban setting. After learning all this information and facts about racism. I feel even more strongly against racism and hatred against other people, because I am closer to understanding the struggle that has been going on and is still going on. I know that I can be done with this paper and feel like I gained something from it.
