Quick question about 'The Rime of the Ancient Mariner'.?

In Coleridge's'The Rime of the Ancient Mariner, the sailor shoots and kills an Albatross. Now he must pay for taking an innocent life. If the moral of the story is that all life is precious, why was the whole crew, who had nothing to do with the albatross, killed?
