Quick question about the htc hero ?

I was watching the htc hero video on the htc website, and the woman was talking about being able to view facebook albums, looking at peoples statuses and updating statuses via the contacts menu, if you don't have free internet does it cost you to do this because you aren't directly opening up the internet.
