I had a power port put in today because I have absolutely no venous access. It is my 6th one, but I haven't had one since 2000. I am not in a good mood tonight because 1, the doctor put me under with general anesthesia instead of conscious sedation (which he warned me he might do, but that is not what I wanted) and 2, it hurts a lot more than I remember. Is it possible that it hurts so much because of scar tissue from previous ports? I really don't remember the other ones hurting at all.
They said to come back to the surgeon in a week and I didn't need to change the bandage. In the past, I did all of my own sticks, bandage changes, iv's etc but I don't have any of the supplies yet. Does it sound right that I leave this bandage on all week? It is really bloody. I will call the doc in the morning, but was wondering if this sounds right.
Also, has anyone else had general anes. for a port? I have always had conscious sedation but he was afraid that he would have a hard time getting one in (because I have had so many) and I feel like he just told me that he would try it without general just to satisfy me, but intended all along to use general. He told my husband I kept moving my arm, which I find hard to believe because versed and diprovan pretty much knocks you out!
Sorry to ramble, I am groggy and sore and just feel like it all doesn't seem right.
