I just got my Bell ExpressVu bill and I have a few Qs.

1 - Did they jack up the price of Digital Standard? When I signed up it was $27, but now it's like $31 or something

2 - Now I have a "Digital Fee" of $3.00... What is this?

3 - I'm actually angry about this - We rented our 4100 and 6100 receivers, and we're at least a year out of our contract. However, it shows we're still paying $13 per month for the receivers in total. In total this is $94 bill. We're used to paying about $76. about $20 more...what's happened? we didn't subscribe to anything new...

I've seen that over the last 3 months it's steadily increased - $76, $83 and now $94.

What is this about?!

1. Yes, digital standard has gone up. While you are under contract, you get a price protection but you have to pay the regular price once your contract end.

2. It's a "because-we-can" fee. (You could also call it Nagra3 fee, Nimiq 4/5 fee or MPEG4 fee.)

3. If you have rented receivers, you will NEVER own them.
The $4 increase on DS + digital fee $3 + $13 rental fee = $20.
I don't know why your increases were staggered.

The price increases and $3 fee were added a long ime ago (at least for everyone else) and were well documented at the time.

Since we can't see your actual bill, it makes it pretty hard to comment on the differences.

hey there, mate! just give the retention department a try & I assure you a 20-40% off programming for 12 months. some people have done this & it had worked out for them. emphasize on the "$3 digital fee" as your standing point, it's materially adverse against you! :p

It's about time you realise it... This 4$ increase on the Digital Standard took place at the beggening of 2007!

That charge has been put in place in early 2008...

I don't get why you are angry about it... As you mention, you are RENTING. Bell still provide you the service (you still have the receivers) so you are still RENTING and therefore have TO PAY THE RENTAL COST. You taught that after paying 2 years of rental the receivers were gonna be yours? If that was the case, woudn't everybody rent and get full service on their receiver for 2 years (it's only 1 with purchase) and a 4100 for 72$ instead of 99$ or a 6100 for 240$ instead of 299$?

Nimiq USA they usually give retention credits in the few months following the increase, not 5-6 months later...
If he wants to get retention offer or credits he better use another complain to get them
If he uses that as the reason he is pissed off they will most probably just credit that charge for like 6 months...
If he says he is generally unhappy and that was the icing on the cake THEN he will get a much better offer

I'm sorry I made you angry with my seemingly to you obvious questions.

This is the first month any of these new charges are appearing on my account which is why I was concerned.

I was also concerned because the people who signed me up for BEV told me that I would stop paying at the end of my contract. He put it to me that the "rentals" were more like monthly payments until the end of the contract, at which time I had paid off the receivers.

I think you should take a close look at your previous bills...

For the 4$ charge it is possible that you had price protection (if you were on a contract) and that since it's your first month after the end of your contract it appears now for the first time.
All clients (whether on a contract or not) received a notice with their bill when the price increased happened notifing them. It was a paper they added in the envellope with the monthly bill

The 3$ charge i'm not too sure about... EV told me when I asked that all clients, even those on a contract will be charged the 3$, meaning you would have had the charge since it was put in place at the beggening of the year. If you were on a contract it is possible that they price protected you and now you're at the first month after the end of contract and see that charge for the first time. All clients were notified of that increase the bill before it happened. There was a little paragraph on the top of the bill (or before the EV portion for one bill clients) informing them of the upcomming increase

As for the rental unfortunatly you were lied too... A call to EV would have given you all the details and you would have find out the truth... Also if you would have read the contract you signed you would have understood that receivers will never be yours, it was simply a RENTAL AGREEMENT

Thanks for your really informative posts ExAgent. I really appreciate it! I manage this although my father pays for the service. He signed the contract but apparently he did not read it as he went on the info that the person from the electronics store gave him...

Unfortunately you misread my post, and I explained things wrong. I'm actually 2 years out of my contract and the new prices haven't been seen until this month. Digital Service Fee came last month, but this month the DS prices went up.

Again, I really appreciate your help. I'm going to buy my receivers in the future.

If they only started charging you last month you're lucking then...as you could see it should have happenned before

Regarding rental fees for receivers, where do these show up on the bill? (I rent a 9242 (since Oct/05) and according to the Bell web-site/account management, I would not be penalized for canceling my rental, as I am out of contract).

I was looking over my latest bill and I do not see any rental charges whatsoever. I then spot-checked past bills all the way back to Oct/05 and there has never been a rental fee applied? I have an original signed rental agreement when the tech installed my system 3 years ago.

Current billing is:
- $31 for Digital Standard
- $3 for Service Fee
- $25 for 6 theme packs
- $10 for HD Value Pack
= $69 in total followed by PST/GST

Am I getting a sweet deal? And if this is the case then will Bell catch on when they poke around my account when I add a second HD receiver to my system?

Thanks,

Andrew

It's impossible that you've been renting the 9242 since 2005, the 9242 only came out at the end of 2007 or early 2008...you are probably renting a 9200

Rental charges are applied each month on the bill with the programming
The rental contract is 1 year, after that period the rental unit can be returned with no penalty
If rental charges were never applied it could be that they classified your unit as a purchase instead of a rental...call them and ask if you own the unit, they will tell you.
