Questions about betta fish with finrot?

I have comfirmed that my veiltail betta fish has finrot and i have a few questions.
What kind of medication do i need?
and does the small black rocks in the filter need to be taken out? because my cartridge is covered in algae and its been in there for months and im thinking about replacing it.
Just wondering if those black rocks do anything to keep the tank clean.
 
Yes take your active carbon out and buy a new one it only works for about 2 months. buy a light antibiotic designed for fin rot or one that says treats fin rot. metheyl blue may work but i don't recommend it. also start with a half dose unless instructed other wise. its external so low doeses of medication will work and you may even consider a salt water bath.
 
Fin-rot is caused by poor water quality, all you have to do is keep the water quality perfect and up the temperature to 84 degrees and add aquarium salt, one tablespoon per 5 gallons of water. If you do this, you'll need no medication and it'll heal by itself, otherwise you can get specific medication at your local pet store.
 
The tank should be thoroughly cleaned and the activated-carbon black rocks replaced every few months - the carbon helps purify the water. There is medication for fin rot that you put in the tank. Fin rot can be prevented with keeping the tank clean with frequent water changes or removing the dirtiest water regularly between water changes from the bottom of the tank. Rinse the tank and all decor, gravel and equipment in hot water with each 100% change. Do not use any harsh chemicals when cleaning - just hot water. Check with your local aquarium store for the medication to add to the tank, and change the water more frequently. Be sure to rinse everything with hot water, dry to remove any contaminants, and dechlorinate the water before adding the fish.
