Question regarding garden location?

Ok...don't laugh... my hubby and I have a small yard. I'd really like to garden but there aren't enough spots that have a good deal of sun throughout the day. The trees that block the sun are actually growing on the other side of our fence in neighbors' yards so tree removal is not an option. We also have a dog run for our pooches that cannot be moved or removed as one of our canine companions decimated the yard in the past (and that is why the dog run now exists). That said, the side of the dog run that touches our lawn gets a glorious amount of sun each day...and the fact that it's a wire fence...it could make an excellent spot for tomatoes and other "vine" plants (we'd just have to pass on any fruit growing below the spray line LOL). Most likely, we'd put up a barrier between the fence and the plants to prevent such contact. In any case, does anyone know of any reason why planting vegetables in such close proximity to an area where dogs urinate and defecate could be harmful?
