question on trying to contact someone in the military?

i was trying to contact and old friend and he is stationed over in italy right now..i was wondering if i sent a letter to the base where he is at with his name on it would he eventually get it cause i know everyone has like there own po box thing so letters can get sent directly to them so would he recieve it would they just toss it away
