Question on Open Clutch Cover install

Web Help

Looking at the bolts, they appear to be quite long, necessitating the removal of the lower and or side fairing. I was wondering if you could just undo the two lower to mid-fairing bolts and gently lift up enough to pull the most forward bolt out w/o having to remove the side?

Not sure if I'm going to install now, or just wait until I can find/afford a new billet plate, springs and caps. Might do it now to help keep it cooler and not slip/chatter when hot.

Thanks

Charlie

You are right, you don't have to remove the side or lower, based on your idea of just pulling away a little. I do believe my brother did the same. If it looks to you as if it will damage your bodywork then go another direction.

Charlie - IMO the first mod any new 848/1098 owner should do is to swap out the fairing fasteners for the Dzus fasteners. You will never have to ask that question again...... You'll be surprised how often you need to remove the fairings, especially if your not a mechanical gumby and you like to DIY, tweak, twiddle, mod etc. It would shit me to tears having to spanner those fairings off every time I had to.

Brett, I agree with the Dzus fasteners. I'm still deciding on color. 1098 came with chrome/polished allen head fairing screws, but I'm thinking about the gold Dzus. The Clutch Cover is on now, very easy, no fairing removal needed, just the 4 allen head bolts, slide it out, and reverse. Looks pretty clean, like the design of the Rizoma Cover, but will wait and have it Anodized Gold I do think. Thinking of the black MPL Clutch Cover and Gold caps, w/ Ti bolts.

I take it the dealer is probably the best place to get the fairing Dzus kit? Or does a sponsor carry them?

Also forgot, stock cover weighs 14.25oz, new cover weighs only 4.8oz. Nice reduction for the little money. I'd imagine CF cover would weigh maybe 2oz pushing it.

Charlie, I also replaced the stock clutch cover with a very nice open Rizoma clutch cover on my 1098 a couple of months ago, but within 100km and after riding in wet conditions you see rust appearing on the stock springs.

So inevitably you will have to get at least new stainless steel springs (SpeedyMoto's for example) and caps (they come in black, red, gold etc.). You might as well install a new anodized spiffy pressure plate (DP for example) in your preferred color at the same time.

The rust on the springs does not harm for a little while obviously, but it sure does not look good on your new 1098...

Good luck...

Robert, I have been reading the thread with the rusty springs, and looking at various different clutch pp's but I have yet to lock in exactly which one I want. SS Springs, and cap definitely, just waiting to get it all sorted out.

Charlie - most people are sourcing them from http://www.kurveygirl.com/shop/

Also - not sure if you have seen the 'How to' thread for the install - http://www.ducatispot.com/forums/showthread.php?t=5561
