Question on Heart Rate, anxiety and excercise...

Hello all,

My wife (who is in her late 40's) suffers from asthma and sometimes anxiety. She started walking on the treadmill last week, for 30 minutes (sometimes 20 min) to try and get in better shape heart wise. So, my question is this..She has asthma and sometimes when she walks on the treadmill, her asthma is triggered off. Is this something that she has to "get over the hump" by walking on the treadmill consistantly?

Also, her blood pressure is always ok, but her heart BPM always seems to be in the 90's...is that normal for her age?? What can she do to bring that down? Does anxiety play a role in the BPM? Sometimes it will be in the 80's but we have a blood pressure monitor at home and she says when she checks it, she'll get a little anxious right before it's done reading.

I just wanted to make sure she is ok and that her BPM's aren't out of whack.

Thanks

Is she premedicating for her asthma before doing the treadmill? If not, she should. If so, she needs to adjust the meds. I jog and I have to do two puRAB of albuterol, 60seconds apart and 15 minutes before jogging. This is standard treatment for asthmatics. She should talk with her pulmonologist about how to determine the proper dosage for her situation.

Since you have asthma, may I ask what your heart rate runs? I'm trying to get an idea what's really normal and maybe what's a little high. Thanks again!

You know, I don't pay any attention to it. I have a normally high pulse anyway - been tested six ways to Sunday to be sure there was nothing going on. Mine is just fast. Even though I jog and do weight work it just won't lower. The key is her resting heart rate upon awakening in the AM. Exercise is certainly going to raise it more.

Technically speaking, one should sit quietly for 5 minutes before taking blood pressure reading. Now, just how often do you think that really happens????
