question on Gallipoli campaign (First World War)?

Im working on my history essay - was WW1 a war of attrition, how far do you agree?

I know Gallipoli campaign is agasint the topic. but I get stuck why it was such a disaster and how this disaster affected the western front.

Any help would be great!!
