Question on fish size?

I am a first time fish owner with a 45 gallon tank and the following fish:
3 bala sharks
1 dwarf guarami
3 guppies
6 tiger barbs
1 dragonfish
1 clown loach

I have read that several of these fish can get very large, even up to 1 foot long! My tank is only 45 gallons.

My question is: How long does it take for the fish to get this big and will they get that big even in my 45 gal tank? i have heard before that some fish only grow big enough to fit comfortably in a tank and then stop. Is this false?

And if they truly do get as big as I have read, how long does it take?

Fish will not grow to the size of the tank, this is a well known myth within the fishkeeping hobby. The only thing that will happen is stunted growth, which will in turn result in internal organ damage, physical defects and eventually death. All fish should be allowed to grow to their maximum size and therefore should be kept in a tank that can accommodate these sizes.

Generally speaking growth rates will be influenced by several factors, including the water quality and the diet. A fish in a large tank will grow much faster than a fish of the same species in a smaller aquarium due to the superior water conditions and extra space.
