Question on chging Verizon mobile number

I moved about a year ago from the east coast to Seattle, and kept my old cell number because I have had it for 15 years. Now, I need to change the number to a local number for business reasons. That's no problem...Verizon will do it. The problem is that the switch is immediate, and I'm told that they can't put a message on the old number for a while saying "This number has been changed..." like is done on a home phone. Switching cold turkey will make it hard for a lot of people to contact me.

Anyone experienced this and come up with a solution. I'm thinking about keeping the old number on a minimal plan for a while, and getting a new number...then putting a message on the old number. It just seems overkill an a pain for something that seems like Verizon should be able to offer.

Yes, you could do that...easily.

Just activate a new line (for YOUR line you want to use). You won't need to do anything as far as lowering plan and stuff as it is only $9.99 per extra line. BUT you will need a phone to hold your old line open and be sure to cancel the line you don't want within 30 days. The issue you may experience is an early termination fee for one of them. Technically, if you CREATE a new line of service, your not just "changing" your number. Your activating a new line and terminating your old line...Verizon won't see this as "changing your number".

No wireless provider offers an easy way to change your number and let people know about it. I can tell you Verizon Wireless has plans for something like this in the future (along with Sprint PCS).

Another option would be instead of getting a new Verizon Wireless number, get a free Google Voice Account and number. It is completely free and they offer many local numbers for many areas. They aren't nationwide, but it's pretty close. You could just activate a Google Voice local number and give that one out for business. Then put a message on your Verizon voicemail that you now have a different number. The only issue is if you rely on Mobile to Mobile calling or Friends and Family, those things may no longer be valid if using Google Voice and a Google Voice phone number. It actually has a lot of additional benefits not offered by Verizon Wireless.
