Question on bicycle wheels...?

A few weeks ago my bike got vandalized. I was able to fix everything but the wheels since they were bent so bad.
So now i need to buy new wheels and i know nothing about sizes. The tires say 700 x 45c. and it has 36 spokes.
Are all 700c wheels the same size or does the x45 thing make a difference? and does it matter what brand i get or will any thing fit?
Its a mongoose with Shamano gears.
 
700c is the size, 45 is the width.

Some frames have a width limit for the wheels, so unless you know your frame can handle something bigger, as long as that number is 45 or smaller, it's fine.

For a road bike 45 is pretty wide anyway.

The number of spokes don't matter. 28 & 32-spoke wheels will be lighter, but 36-spokes wheels are stronger. So you can replace it with a lighter wheel if you want.
