Question on a split charge (dual battery) system in my car?

I have recently installed the wiring for a split charging system in my diesel car and have used a 40amp relay in the process. I have connected the pins on the relay as follows:

Connector 85 = chassis earth
Connector 86 = Relay switch - wire from warning light/alternator
Connector 87 = charge to battery 2 (currently only a wire running to the boot - battery yet to be installed)
Connector 30 = charge feed from alternator

I have all of the above in place, however when I measure the voltage from Pin 87 it reads a constant 12volts until the engine is switched on where the voltage increases to 14Volts - this does not seem correct as I would have thought that this pin should read 0Volts when the engine is off, am I correct? It would seem that perhaps there is a faulty relay involved?

Many thanks
