I don't know why but I am so drawn to this era of history, I am so amazed of the sacrifice that these men and women gave to America. They went through the depression, then defeated Hitler and the Empire of Japan then came home and built our nations highway System and if that wasn't enough they built our modern world that we get to enjoy everyday. They Truly are the "Greatest Generation"!!!
My Grandfather took part in the invasion of Normandy (2nd day), he never spoke of his experience, he never bragged about what he saw or did. The vast majority of what he went through wasn't known in our family until his funeral. He was given a full military funeral there on his farm in Indiana and a man read all the battles he fought in and the medals he received...there wasn't a dry eye there.
Anyway.....my question:
I have been watched lots of programs on the history channel and the military channel and I have noticed that after the Allies arrived in France that it took nearly a year (June 1944-April 1945) to get to Berlin. They were fighting a very fierce German army who was also fighting in the east against the Soviets. You can't help but to wonder what would it have been like if Germany wasn't fully engaged with the Russians and it's entire army was pointed solely at the Americans, British, Canadians etc.
How long (best guess) would it have taken us to defeat the entire German Army IF they were not also fighting the Russians
How long? and what would that have looked like?
thanks
