When experiencing acid rebound and coming off the PPI's...other than the obvious heartburn, what were some of your other bothersome symptoms? I have more gas than usual....mostly trapped gas. It's driving me crazy.

Thanks

I was on Zegerid (PPI) 40mg once daily for four months. I had intentions of going to Prilosec and gradually taper off but my GI told me to take Pepcid Complete (40mg AM & 20mg PM) instead. My ulcers healed up on the PPI and hopefully the Pepcid will prevent their return.

I experienced a lot of gas for about a month then it gradually decreased. It's still more than I'd like. Other than the gas, getting off the PPI was uneventful, thank God.

Blessings,
Annie

Waking up in the middle of the night coughing. I guess from acid in my esophagus. It didn't burn, just made me cough.

I experienced severe bloating, pains in the pit of my stomach, and gas. These are symptoms I did not have before I took the PPI and thankfully have not experienced again after the initial two months when I first went off the Aciphex. I was pretty miserable for weeks at a time. Rose

I was on 10mg of Rabeprazole for 5 years and after seeing a Naturopath (thank you benefits!) was advised to get off them as quickly as possible so my stomach could start getting normal acid levels back and so I could start actually getting something out of the food I'm putting into my body.

I actually dropped down to every 2nd day for 1 week, then every 3rd day for 2 weeks, then 1/week for a couple weeks. I have been off them now for pretty much 4 months. I take a digestive enzyme with every meal (full spectrum veggy friendly) and also take a Probiotic pill every morning. I have found since I changed of the PPI's and moved to enzymes and probiotics that I have a lot less burping gas (providing I don't overeat which is hard to do around events like Ribfest!), my skin is healthier and I have far more consistent bowel movements.

Get off the PPI's and good luck!

Thanks for the replies.

I am day 15 post PPI and I haven't taken Zantac since Sunday. The Zantac was giving me constipation so I stopped that. However, I am consulting with my Naturopathic Doctor (awaiting her reply) regarding that. She has me on an Intestinal Repair Complex to get my system back to normal along with vitamins/minerals and Melatonin. It's only been 5 days so it's too soon to tell. The only other thing I use is DGL which seems to be working pretty good along with my diet which is low in carbs and sugar. We'll see, but I am hopeful this will work.

Some days I have stomach discomfort most of the day and some days I don't get it much at all. I haven't experience bloating, just gas and pains off and on. Every day is different. I, too, never had these problems before the PPI.

Is it the excess acid that's causing these symptoms?

It sounRAB like you are doing very well after two weeks if you can go several days in a row without backup Zantac. Congratulations and I hope those days without significant heartburn become the norm for you.

Do you know why your ND is having you take Melatonin? I always thought it was a hormone the body produced to regulate sleep cycles. How does it relate to digestion? I take Melatonin for sleep but never thought of taking it for reflux.

Thank you for posting your experience and progress. I am always learning something from your posts.

At first, I thought that's why she was giving me the Melatonin until I called her and she told me it's for the reflux. Apparently, there have been studies done where people have significantly improved their reflux with 6mg Melatonin after 40 days or so. It is supposed to strenghthen the LES or so they say. I also did a quick search online and found some info on it. I don't remeraber where or what site but if you search you'll probably find it.
