question about "the rime of the ancient mariner"?

why does the ancient mariner kill the albatross? My English teacher says we have no idea why...but isn't it because it eats all of the food? I don't understand how she doesn't pick up on that?

Is this the reason?
but in the poem it says "It ate the food it ne'er had eat, and round, and round it flew..."
