Question about the motorola bravo?

Im buying a motorola bravo from one of my friends. But i don't have a data plan, my old phone was a samsung impression so if i just take out my sim card and put it in the motorola would i be able to use the phone and the internet just on it wouldnt work or would i have to pay for the data
