Question about taking pictures in the dark?

I have a Canon a650 IS 12.1 megapixel camera. I had to take some shots of some tunnels underground with little light. I hate using the flash as it takes away from the natural aspect of the photo. I use the "Indoor setting" which seems to do great for these kind of shots, but I have to keep the camera extremely steady, otherwise the pictures blur easy. Is there any other way I can take better shots in low light conditions other than this that I won't have to worry about being so steady all the time and have clear pictures? Thanks.
 
Yes, you absolutely have to use a tripod in very low light (especially underground tunnels with little light). Your camera has full manual controls, so take it out of Auto or the 'indoor' setting and use Aperture priority mode (Av) instead. Make sure the flash is off. Keep your ISO low (80-100) for low noise results.
Select your aperture (experiment with different apertures). The camera will select the shutter speed, which will be slow. You may have to use Infinity focus.
And don't forget to use the delayed timer to prevent camera movement during the exposure.
When you are more certain of which apertures and shutter speeds work best, you can then use M (manual) to select your own shutter speed AND aperture...or you can use Tv (shutter priority). The camera will select the correct aperture. Or, continue to use Av.
