i finnally got myself to a doctor for a prescripton of suboxone about a week ago. i did exactly like he said before i took my first dose. it had been ten days since i took any methadone. (60mg). and 18 hrs since i had did any heroin. i was already feeling the affects of w/d pretty heavily so i took it an 8mg. i let it dissolve under my toung for ten minutes exactly like i was supposed to and it made me deathly sick. i tried as hard as i could to stick it out but i was delirious and after 5 hours of the worst w/d imaginable i had a friend inject me with some heroin. i immediatly felt better, but since then i have been deathly scared to take it again. i have been using for five years straight and have experienced intence withdrawl but nothing like that. i just dont know what to do. ive heard of the stuff making people sick but i did everything right. my doc is out of town so im kinda on my own right now. what should i do? should i try it again or wait untill my next appointment and let him know what happend? did i not wait long enough or could i just have a bad reaction to the naloxone? whatever i do, i just cant go through that again.

if anyone who has went through the same thing can give me some advice id really appreciate it. thanks

Hello Jason

I am so sorry this is happening to you. I have no experience with Suboxone.
Have you called the doctor's answering service as he may well have a physician covering him that also works with suboxone. If not, then I would suggest you get to an Emergency Room and explain what happened and see what they advise to do. Perhaps at the very least they can prescibe something to hold you over.

I am just so sorry that you are trying to do something so good and having a problem. Hang in there and post again to let us know how you are doing.

All the best

thats the thing though. doctors need a specal licence to prescribe suboxone so going to the er would be a waste of time. they would just tell me to deal with it and try to send me to a detox which is impossible because i have a job and totally support myself so i cant afford to miss work. the worst part is is i have no insurence so i am paying out of pocket for the suboxone. i work almost every night so i just cant risk getting that sick again because i wont be able to work like that. so on top of paying for the suboxone i have to pay to support my habbit. im just so lost right now....
if someone could just answer me this question. if i take the suboxone and it makes the withdrawl worse like the first time and i end up having to use again, would the suboxone do the same thing the next day? or would i be ok since i have the suboxone in my system?

Jason,
I've been on Suboxone now for 3 months and I was only taking Hydrocodone, a much weaker opiate than heroin but for the amount I was taking daily, 150-200mg a day for 2 years straight, I still had to be in mild/moderate withdrawls, about 20-25 hrs since my last dose, which I did and it went fine, I've been doing well.
What I think happened to you from what I've read is that you took the sub way too soon after your last use of heroin....my doc said 12-24 hrs after my last hydro dose....just to be safe I went 22hrs and was fine.
Hydro has a very short half life whereas low-dose fentanyl or crushed oxycodone have somewhat longer but still short half-lives and leave more quickly. Heroin is somewhere in between, longer acting than oxycodone but shorter than methadone. I don't think your 18hrs was nearly enough.
What I've heard is you need to wait 36-48 hrs to be safe for the sub and make sure the H is out of your system. You, unfortunately will feel sick but not for long, you'll probably have to take a few days off, too. If you've taken methadone since, you have to wait even longer so hopefully you are still 10plus days off of that....
During the 36-48hrs in between that time before you induce with suboxone, which can be rough with withdrawls, you can use clonidine

Jason, sounRAB like KEW gave you some sound advice, which exactly echoed what my addiction specialist told me.

As to the ER, my specialist said that if I had a reaction like the one you had I was supposed to go to the ER and they'd know what to do. The fact that you are taking something for your addiction should be proof enough that you already are doing something about it.

Also, surely a physician certified for suboxone wouldn't have another doctor on call for him/her who wasn't experienced with addiction. Please call for help right away. Like now. Don't wait.

I beg you to be brave. I can't even imagine H WD, but I must share with you that my wonderful kid brother OD'd on H leaving behind 3 very young children and I don't want that to happen to anyone again. Ever.

When you feel like you just can't take it anymore, come back here. We can at least provide temporary diversion.

sounRAB like kewood had some good advice....I can relate to not having time or money to feel so sick again. it sucks.
