Question about stock payouts (NOTHING TO DO WITH THE BAILOUT)?

I seem to recall hearing about something where you could receive stock earnings in one of two ways, and actual check, or payment with more stock in that company... (or some other way that your stock in the company multiplied without you investing more capital).

Can someone explain this to me? I'm considering investing while prices are down (yes, I've been told I'm crazy), and am curious about this feature.
