My mother-in-law adopted an 8 year old cat about a month ago from the SPCA. Its a cute cat and appears friendly when you first meet it, but, it quickly turns on you and has attacked everyone who has tried to befriend it, including my MIL and me (and all animals love me, but not this crazy cat).
Since the cat attacks everyone, my MIL keeps the cat closed off in the spare bedroom, and only goes in to feed it and change it's litter box. She has made no progress in befriending the cat and intends to soon return it to the SPCA, where it will no doubt be put to sleep.
Even knowing how vicious this cat is, can someone suggest a way of "getting through" to the cat? How can I befriend it? I'd hate to see it returned to the SPCA, because I know it'll be put down.
I already have 2 very friendly cats (ages 10 and 15), and, I'd be willing to take in this mean one if I was sure I could befriend it. Any suggestions? Thank you.
I have spent hours and hours sitting in the room with the cat, and it seems that the longer I spend with the cat, the less it likes me.
It has physically attacked my mother-in-law, me, and 3 others who have tried to befriend it. It claws at us, attempts to bite, and growls like it has rabies or is possessed.
Obviously, it must have been severely abused by its former owners. What can one do in a situation like this? Is it possible to befriend an 8 year old cat that was probably tortured by humans for its whole life?
