Question about military life insurance?

This is a serious question.

For many years the German army was (like the Japanese army) not allowed to be involved in combat. It dates back to the restrictions made by the Allies after World War 2.

Now that the German army are in a combat zone in Afghanistan (although not officially involved in a war but as trainers and peace keepers), the life insurance companies of the soldiers who have been killed recently have refused to pay out because "war death" is not covered!

Does anyone know what the situation is with the UK or US or other military? I find it incredible.

It would also be interesting to know if policies paid out during the world wars - not just for soldiers but for civilian deaths. Surely all the insurance companies would have gone bust if they had paid?
