Question about images in HTML?

I started teaching myself html and I'm reading through this online tutorial. It's telling me how to insert images and such, but its not telling me where you store the images. For the example its says <img src="boat.gif" alt="Big Boat" /> . But how do the browsers know where to find the boat image? Where do you store it? Thanks in advance!
