Question about how a child custody case works?

Hello, I just had a question about a child custody case. What I do know is that you don't have to go to court right away. First you have to go to a mediation meeting and if both parents can't agree then they have to go to court to see a judge. Well this is what I have been told. I was just wondering if the parents don't agree at the mediation meeting and do have to go to court, will it be scheduled that day? Or will another date be made to go in again to see the Judge. I was just wondering. Thank you for all your Answer. =-)
