Has anyone ever attempted to petition their dependency status for the purpose of financial aid (FAFSA)? Im 19 yrs old, and according to the criteria that the government sets for financial aid applications, im not considered independent. But i know there's special cirmumstances that they could could consider you independent, but you have to go through an appeals process and provide a bunch of documentation and stuff. Has anyone ever gone through this? Was it successful? My mother, the only parent i have in the U.S & i had a fall out and we haven't communicated in a long while. I don't depened on her, literally, for ANYTHING, but according to the government, i still need her tax information when im applying for financial aid. Is this fair? I work, pay taxes, have my own health insurance policy, my own car insurance policy and pay for 70 % of my expenses currently (i currently live with my older sister, so im not paying any rent). Im even about to move out and rent a place of my own with roomates, so why can't i be considered independent?
