Question about cooking tandoori chicken?

What is the best way of cooking tandoori chicken?

I have tried marinating the chicken and then grilling it, but the sauce burns way before the chicken is cooked. When I cook it in the oven the liquids run out and wash the sauce off.

How does one cook tandoori chicken without a tandoor oven?

I have a good recipe, so I do not need that. I just need some tips on cooking the chicken.
