Question about architectural compositions?

I'm new to architecture, and I was wondering usually what materials are used for a simple architectural composition? I've been asked to analyze an existing (can be built or unbuilt) building, and represent my interpretation of the building by creating a composition that reflects the building's design concept, and use elements such as texture, materials, light/shade, color, etc. The composition could be 2D or 3D.
For 2D, would you suggest simply a blueprint sketch, or something more artistic? And for 3D (though height has be really low so the work is pretty much flat), what materials should I use, and should it be again what the building looks like, or something more abstract?
Thanks for any tips!
