my friend who is currently in the Army Attempted to kill himself a few nights ago. He was admitted to an inpatient mental health facility. Hes out now and is extremely depressed. He wants to stay in the Army but is afraid that he will be discharged for his suicide attempt and his his depression. I was kinda wondering what kind of discharge he may be looking at if the Army does discharge him.He OD on some prescribed pain medication. Hes been 100% cooperative so far through out this situation.

I believe it depends on what he is depressed about. Is it PTSD from a deployment or is it something that happened while he was in the US? He may just get professional help when it comes to PTSD but if not, he may get discharged if it continues or his command sees him as a security risk, etc.

He needs the help so make sure he gets it. He'll have up to one year in the army on profile to work through the depression. Lots of soldiers have gone through this - he'll be fine as long as he does what the doctors tell him to do.
