Question about a 2002 Honda Accord EX upper control arm/joint replacement?

Yesterday I decided to take my car up to NTB for the first rotation for a new set of tires I recently purchased. And of course the mechanic comes into the waiting room telling me he needs me to come see something on my car. We walk to my car, he kneels down and wobbles the right front wheel on my car and tells me that that's an indication that something is not right and needs to be fixed. All in all, by the end of the visit I learn that my car needs a new upper control arm/joint replacement and it needs to be done soon. The thing is... I've been calling around and this repair is going to cost a lot... I've gotten quotes from $300 (small garages) - $600 (Dobbs/NTB/Honda dealers). The problem is... my car has 102,500 miles and is due for every single fluid to be flushed and the timing belt needs to be replaced... all costing at least $1200.00. So my question is... what exactly is the importance of this repair?? NTB didn't say anything to me about it other than I need to do it and it's such a severe problem that it would fail inspection (it passed with flying colors just last month!!). The car drives perfect. I can't find anything on the internet other than it could cause uneven tire wear... and if that's just the case then I'd like to wait another 2-3 months because I'd rather gets all the belts/fluids changed first... (I've heard what happens if you don't change the timing belt in time!!).
Can someone please give me more info on this?? Thanks

The main problem with a loose upper arm/joint will be slightly uneven tire wear. There is also the possibility of some clunking noise. Unless the part is so loose as to be ready to fall apart, there is no safety concern, or immediate need to get it fixed. I'd have one or two more shops look at it to see if they can tell you how far along the wear is. If it was getting dangerous to drive, you'd definitely be getting some major noise over bumps.
