question about 89 pontiac 6000 transmission,?

The car has 1, 2 and Drive after it changes into drive it use to shift into like overdrive once it got to 50or 55 mph now I notice it only shifts to that once in a while.someone said its a small part on side of transmission that causes that.it has a 2.8 motor.any help will be appreciated.Thanks
 
Torque converter solenoid is about $43. The problem is the labor to install. Usually have to drop engine cradle to gain access to valve body which it is under.
