question about 2001 mercury Mountaineer front differential?

my front differential was making a noise the faster I went to faster the noise. My friend dropped out the front drive shaft and the noise stopped and I was able to get back home. I am now 2wd instead of awd and the gas mileage is much better. My question is....how long can I drive it like this? Do I have to fix it? Is it expensive?
