To mark the Diamond Jubilee celebrations, this week's quiz - the final one in our series - is a celebration of events throughout Her Majesty's glorious 60-year reign.
Our Queen has been a staple of British culture for six decades, undertaking duties that have taken her all over the world, and prevailing through all manner of challenges. Throughout these years she has remained not only a dedicated consort to the country, but also a loving wife, mother and grandmother.
As Queen, Elizabeth II has travelled across the globe, visiting 116 countries on a total of 26 overseas tours. She has been required to attend numerous royal engagements (only three of which she has missed during her reign), share stages with some of modern history’s most influential figures, give festive speeches, act as patron to 600 charities and has seen numerous Prime ministers, Presidents and rulers in her time. She is a businesswoman whose duties are endless.
With such a busy working schedule, many would think that Her Majesty might find it difficult to have time for anything else, but amazingly she has remained a devoted homemaker all through her sovereignty. With four children and double that amount of grandchildren, family has always been paramount to Elizabeth II, and she is the first Queen in history to have a Diamond Wedding anniversary. In a recent interview, Prince William – the Queen’s 3rd grandchild – revealed that in his eyes, Elizabeth II is a caring, relaxed grandmother.
As we approach the Jubilee weekend, attention is drawn to our monarch’s image. An image we have seen on currency and stamps; an image we have seen referenced again and again in pop culture, fashion and art. The portrait of a woman who has, for 60 years, remained an ambassador for Britain in constantly changing times, more so arguably than any other ruler before her.
This weekend is a celebration of our Queen: a truly great figure, whose legacy will not be eroded by time.
This week’s quiz looks back over the highs and lows of Her Majesty’s reign. Think you know the answers to Gavin's questions? Take the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Royal Quiz, Week 18 to find out.
