Quadrophenia - Phil Daniels

I remember him in a lot of 70's punk stuff...younger peeps will know him from the Blur 'Parklife' video.

I'm just watching this now on TCM and wondering what went wrong? He was brilliant, he could have had any of Gary Oldmans (huge fan) parts in Hollywood.

Where has he been in the last 20 years? He should have been in LA.

I think it's no secret that Mr Daniels enjoys a drink with the meal. He's also "very much his own man". He's definitely NOT suited to Hollywood, and I'm not surprised that he didn't succeed there. The really surprising question is why Oldman did.

Such a waste of talent though isn't it. Gary Oldman in Leon - Hell Yes, but nothing else, Phil could have pi$$ed those parts easy.

Yup forgot he was in Time Gentlemen, but that wasn't great...

I feel like he could have done so much more with his talent.

You're so wrong, that show was ace!

It had Al Murray, Rebecca Front and Julia Sawalha too! And IIRC it was written by Richard Herring (and I think he was the 'postman' in a pub? well I suppose someone has to deliver mail to a pub)

The old 'not-fulfilling-their-talent' argument never quite convinces me, Bettycat. They said it about Orson Welles, they said it about Peter Cook... heck, they'll no doubt say it about Pete Doherty.

What gets in the way of talent, of course, is life. And life can take you in a hundred different directions, not necessarily to the benefit of your talent.

It's only a sad story if you have regrets. And something tells me (and I stand to be corrected if I'm wrong) that Phil Daniels probably has few, if any, regrets in his life.

I agree with your post/s zoot, just don't mention Pete Doherty (sp) in the same sentence as the others!

I hope he's happy, at least he has the repect of us lot, Phil that is! Pete is an arse.

I just feel like shaking some people sometimes! When they 'strike' me as incredible actors. I fear he will be remembered as **** from Eastenders in his epitaph.

And winactive, yes TGP was funny, weird kind of new sky sit-com time and day thing. I always enjoyed the ones I saw despite Julia 'press gang' Swalhila!

Let us not forget Phil Daniels' mighty performance in Mike Leigh's Meantime, opposite Tim Roth. Released in 1984 (I think), it was the first time I've ever heard someone call someone else a "muppet" as a term of abuse. Wonderful film.

Oh, it's genius! You must see it! Definitely one of the best British films of the '80s. Painfully funny, in that sort of Mike Leigh, bittersweet, tragicomic, despairing, humdrum, emotionally troubled, socially embarrassed style. (See also 'Bleak Moments', 'Life Is Sweet', 'Grown-Ups', etc etc etc...)

I have this. I can recommend anyone to pick it up. It's in the Carlton 'Silver Collection'. Directed by Mike Leigh - the guy who epitomises (invented?) the 'gritty, slice of life' film-making style.

@bettycat

If you look anything like Julia Sawalha, bad hair or not, you will be OK by me. (Strangely, this doesn't extend to her own sister, Nadia, who is a munter of epic proportion. I think she must be her 'evil' reflection! :D )

I like the scene in the pub, with the dead-end conversations between Coxy, Mark, Colin and Hayley!

This also stars a very excellent (and young-looking - although in his early twenties) Tim Roth, although Oldman and Daniels would only be about 25 they look much older.

If you're looking for enjoyable films with Phil Daniels in, check out 'Goodbye Charlie Bright' (which I had to get on DVD as no cinemas near me had it on for more than a week) with Paul Nicholls, Danny Dyer, Dani Behr (!) and Nicola Stapleton (!!) in. I enjoyed it immensely - not quite in the same league critically, but enjoyable nonetheless.
