i have had both a trx250ex quad and a kx85 bike in the past and now have the crf230L dual sport. The best one to ride with a passenger is a quad. However, I had a lot more fun on my dirt bike because you don't have to worry about trails being wide enough for a quad, and you can jump it a lot easier. Also, the bike feels a lot safer when going up rutted hills. I got the dual sport because there is nowhere around my house to park and ride anymore, so i have to ride to the trails on the bike.
