like the title.

Purchased a used 3100. hooked it up in place of my 2700.
Called bell to activate.

Waited 2 hrs. no activation.
called back, waited additional 2 hrs. still no activation.

called back again.. They now tell me that the smart card in the receiver is too old to update the unit, and they can't send me a new card, as it has been inactive so long they have already moved 2 smart cards above the current one. (Davinci cards)
So this receiver requires the/a card from the middle stage (newer then mine, but older then the current one) to do an update on this unit.

Anyone? Did I just buy a paperweight?
Is this unusable?

thanks in advance.

Bell seem to be doing this more and more lately, refusing to issue cards to very old recevers, so my guess is it is a paperweight now.

Might not harm to try a different CSR again, though.

I thought if you had an older card (not the middle one you require, but older than that), they would be willing to send you a new one, but they are supposed to charge you $70 for it.
probably better to get a 6131 on sale or so instead...

Currently E654 at time of answer, current for others http://www.digitalhome.ca/forum/showthread.php?t=44637
If it is working in all other ways the only limit is Bell won't send you the current smart card because of policy, so take Pinza's advice and try dealing with another CSR, or ask to escalate the call to the next level, (speak to a supervisor or retentions as they are able to do many things a CSR can't)!

Thanks for the responses.

I was actually speaking with a TSR, and he didn't have a problem sending me the new Davinci cards. but he said he couldn't send me one of the middle stage cards as they didn't have any or exist?

Apparently I need the middle card to do an update.

We have one of the new davinci cards and we tried putting it in and doing the update but it didn't do anything.

On the third attempt thats when the tech found out that we need the middle stage card to do that update first.

So I'm not sure what to do.

If they buy a new receiver then I have to revamp the whole setup. (it's my parents and they have an old dish, with 2 other 2700 boxes.) I'll need to upgrade the dish, add a sw44 switch and rewire the house with RG6 and so on. I dont have a huge problem with it, just going to be quite a bit of work and time.
As well they don't really care if they have HD. Even though they have 2 hd tv's.

Make sure you are getting a good signal, and that the receiver is set to take a download without permission. Leave the receiver (with or without card in) in the off position to take download overnight if possible.

You might want to give this a try

Turn on the receiver

On the remote, press MENU then 6 and then 1

On the remote, press the following sequence: INFO then BROWSE then THEME

Press the TV/VIDEO button, and then the ird's Front power button

The receiver will reboot, flush its memory and redownload its software

Now your receiver is RESET to Factory defaults
