Pumping up road bike tires?

Okay, I might sound stupid, but I can't pump up my road bike tires. I unscrew the tip on the tire (the little silver thing under the cap) and put the pump on, but the air always comes out the schrader end and won't stay in the tire. How can I get it to stay in???

When you unscrew the presta valve push down on it for a split second to unseat it, they get stuck sometimes. Make sure the pump nozzle is all the way on, you may have to turn it back and forth to get it on far enough.
